Overview
First independant French highschool orchestra
Description
The David d'Angers High School Symphony Orchestra (OLDA) was created in 1983
by Jean-Jo ROUX. On 8 December 2008 he handed over the baton to Jean-
François MIALOT, the new music director.
There are more than 80 musicians from 11 years old to 18 years old in the
orchestra. They study at the David d'Angers junior and senior schools, which do not
specialise in music.
OLDA is a non-profit-making organisation . It's run by a board whose chairman is
the headmaster of David d'Angers High School, by musicians, parents and the music
director. The musical activity takes place at school but not in school time. That's
what makes OLDA a unique orchestra in France.
It's during our training course week, at the beginning of the school year, that the
musical programme is rehearsed. This is also a way to make the integration of
newcomers easier and to create the cohesion of the group.
OLDA performs about 20 times a year. It plays classical and modern music, as well
as movie music and new compositions.
The most important part of the musical season is the international tour that is
financed by parents and the receipts from our concerts.
On these tours, we have had the opportunity to perform in wonderful places such as
Beijing, Shanghai and the United Nations in New York City. But these places,
awesome as they are, will never make us forget the human response we received
from our host musicians and their families.
In return, OLDA welcomes in Angers the orchestras it has met on its tours abroad.
These exchanges create a fantastic network of friendship that we wish to preserve
and develop.
